Heat Protection 101: How to Protect Your Hair When Blow Drying & Using Hot Tools

If you use a blow dryer, curling iron, or flat iron (and most of us do), heat protection isn’t optional—it’s essential.

Heat itself isn’t the enemy. Unprotected heat and excessive temperatures are what cause dryness, breakage, and loss of shine over time. The right products and the right technique allow you to enjoy your styling routine while keeping your hair healthy.

Think of a heat protectant as SPF for your hair. You don’t skip sunscreen at the beach, and you shouldn’t skip protecting from heat damage before styling.

Blow Drying Is Not Bad for Your Hair

This is one of the biggest myths I hear.

Blow drying does not damage your hair when:

  • You use a proper heat protectant

  • You control your temperature

  • You keep the airflow moving instead of concentrating heat in one spot

In fact, controlled blow drying with the right product often leaves the hair smoother and healthier than air drying, which can cause the hair to swell and frizz.

How Hot Is Too Hot?

More heat does not mean better results.

For most Caucasian hair types, hot tools should never exceed 350°F to prevent heat damage.
At higher temperatures, the internal structure of the hair can soften and permanently weaken.

Consistent, moderate heat + proper protection = better shine, better longevity, and less breakage.

Choosing the Right Heat Protectant

The most important factor is whether your hair is wet or dry.
You need different types of protection for each.

For Dry Hair + Iron Styling (Second or Third Day Hair)

If you’re touching up your style with a curling iron or flat iron on already-dry hair, you want a dry heat protectant.

A wet product on dry hair can cause sizzling and unnecessary damage. A dry spray or lightweight oil gives the hair slip so the iron glides smoothly.

My go-to recommendations:

How to use:
Lightly mist or apply a small amount, comb/finger/brush through, and then use your iron. (you can spray per section before iron too)

For Wet Hair: Blow Drying + Curling or Flat Ironing

When you’re starting with freshly washed hair, your heat protectant needs to go in before the blow dry.
This protects the hair during both the drying process and any hot tool work that comes after.

Wet hair is more vulnerable, so this step is critical.

My trusted recommendations:

  • Kenra – Blow-Dry Spray - reliable, salon-grade thermal protection

  • Innersense Hair Love Prep Spray - lightweight priming spray that protects from heat while adding body and strength

  • Hairstory – Primer - excellent for simplified routines and healthy hair

How to use:
Apply to towel-dried hair, focusing on mid-lengths and ends.
Comb/brush through for even distribution.
Blow dry.
Then finish with your curling iron or flat iron if desired.

Common Heat Styling Mistakes I See

  • Skipping heat protection “just this once”

  • Using wet-hair products on dry hair before irons

  • Turning tools up too high out of habit

  • Going over the same section multiple times instead of using proper tension and technique

Healthy Hair and Heat Can Coexist

You don’t have to give up your blow dryer or curling iron to have healthy hair.

With the right temperature, the right products, and a little intention, you can:

  • Protect your hair

  • Maintain shine and softness

  • Extend the life of your color and your style

If you’re not sure which heat protectant is right for your routine, I’m always happy to make a personalized recommendation based on your hair type and how you style at home.
